Girls day at the vineyard

The three sisters from Student Life took a day trip up to visit a winery in Cornville AZ today. I've mentioned that Cara and I get asked very regularly if we are related, and occasionally she and Beth Ann get asked that as well. We've started referring to ourselves as the Student Life sisters.

There are some nice vineyards in this part of Arizona, and I'd visited this one with Heather and other friends for her birthday back in November. We have Fridays off in the summer, so we decided to head up for a day trip to get out of the heat and spend some time together away from work.

It was such a relaxing way to spend the day.
We parked ourselves in these chairs most of the day. We got a flight of wines to try, and would just go inside to get our next glass whenever we were ready. There was also a live performer on the porch, and he even sang some Buffet. It was a bit warm (it is still July, even though we're further north), but it was lovely in the shade.

They don't serve food (other than snacky stuff), but there was a food truck outside where we got some lunch.
And of course, there is this wonderful tree swing which is very photo worthy.
I really appreciate the fact that I get to work with these amazing women who are also good friends. I've known them both for over 10 years, and we've had a lot of good times together--both at work and outside of it. If I can have a lifetime career like the one I have, and make lifelong friends, I'd say I win. Thanks for the fun day, sisters!

Some trapeze stuff

A few things of note in this post--Ali is flying again and George is building a house! These two things are both very impressive and exciting in their own way. Less than two months ago, Ali suffered a horrific ankle break while landing wrong in the net. She had surgery and they put a plate in her ankle--today, she did her first swing (in an air boot and safety lines, of course). Yes, this was approved by her doctor (and George). It'll be awhile before she can do tricks or anything out of lines, but at least she can work on keeping her strength up in her swing--and that boot adds weight, so she put an ankle weight on her good leg to even things out. She's such a badass! Even her doctors were amazed at how quickly she has healed from such a bad break. She wasn't going to let it stop her for long. I'm very glad to have my friend back up there with us.

The other fun news is that George is building a house....here he is, hard at work.
Oh wait, no, just kidding. But he is building a house...he's just not the one actually building it. The plan is to build a 1400 square foot guest house in the back of the yard. It'll have two bedrooms, full kitchen/living room, laundry, and a two car garage. There will be a paved driveway that leads from the street back to the new house as well. This will be for guests who come to fly and coach, and one day, likely a retirement-friendly home for George and Jan. It'll be so exciting to watch it all come together! It will definitely change the view from the board though.....but, they can one day sit on the porch of their new house and watch the flying happen.
We're all very excited for George and Jan, and look forward to our first sleepover in the Roso Resort guest house. You might not know this guy up on the platform with us--that's Bob and he's my mom's age! He's a great guy and definitely a role model in staying active. He just had a quadruple bypass a few months ago, and he was back up here flying with us in no time.

I'll have to try to remember to recreate this picture in a year or so when the house is completely finished. Stay tuned!

Birdseye view of the farm

My mom was flying back from Edmonton and the flight path took her right over our farm! It's fun to see it from a birdseye view. The new airport in Williston is just a few miles south east of our farm, so there are quite a few more planes flying over. It's fun that my mom was able to catch a glimpse from the plane window. It looks so tiny! If you can, zoom in to see it more clearly.

VRMLCon 2024

Tyler had another successful VRMLCon in Denver! I won't be able to write much about the things that actually happened at the event this year since I wasn't' able to be there (thanks, Microsoft outage). I do have plenty of photos though, so unless Dave jumps on here to write this post, they'll have to tell the story. The main thing you should know is that this is a really big deal. Tyler and his team once again put in countless hours to put this event together, and it all went very smoothly. This was the second year he's done this, as you know, but they were without their most popular game, Echo Arena. Last year was the first and last time Echo would be in this event because Meta put an end to it. Echo was what brought the majority of the crowd to the event last year, so they weren't quite sure how it would be without that popular game. Luckily though, the other games have plenty of fans as well, and they ended up filling the room again. Here is Tyler in his element!

Here is a behind the scenes look at the room. they changed up a few things this year including the orientation of the stages and an improved lighting setup, but the desk that Dave and Tyler built last year was front and center once again.
This desk has been living in our shed all year, which is where it's likely to stay until Tyler is done running this event. Who knows though, it might be something he incorporates into other jobs in the future.
There was a team of people involved in the planning once again this year, and Tyler even recruited a few people from home to come up to Denver to help. His buddies Max, John, and Jeremy, all who were former RMTV leaders in their time. Jeremy had a ton of equipment that was useful for this event, so he and Tyler sort of traded each other services in a partnership. Tyler did some live streaming of robotics events for Jeremy and in return, he loaned Tyler this equipment and helped out with this event. John ran the video cameras and Max helped with elements of the production. He is proving to be quite an amazing leader, and we couldn't be more proud.
The amount of planning and organization that goes into coordinating and running an event like this is pretty astounding. He's added a number of new elements to the event based on what he learned last year, and because of the differences given the games that were there this year. Instead of Echo, there were 4 different games, all shooter style games. He wasn't as familiar with those games as he was with Echo, so he had to learn them all to be able to make the different graphics and appropriately coordinate things for live game play.
You'll see that many of those involved are wearing headsets with microphones. These were used so that all of those on the production team are able to communicate with one another throughout the event. This year, they recorded their "behind the scenes" chatter, and Tyler shared that video with us. I thought it was really interesting to listen to various parts of the event, hearing Tyler's voice while he was making decisions, guiding his team and making sure things went smoothly. Take a listen and see if it gives you an idea of how it all works. You'll hear a variety of voices, and the ones you hear the loudest are the commentators who are calling the action during the game. You'll hear the support team in the background here and there throughout.
This shows what the room looked like with spectators watching the players on stage.
At the end the event, they crowned the champions for each game. Tyler had to make a lot of different graphics for the event, including a champion slide for each team so they had one available no matter who won.
It was fun to listen to the last few minutes of the audio of the event to hear how the production team closed out the first day. I also loved seeing Tyler's name roll through the credits as Director of the event. Proud mom!

This team had much to celebrate at the end of the event. They put in a ton of work, communicating regularly from their homes around the country, each with their roles to make it all happen. Tyler works the most closely with David (to his right), who he has become good friends with over these years working together. It is so impressive to see what these young adults were able to pull off again this year. I'm sorry I couldn't be there to see it all happen, but I'm no less proud of this huge accomplishment. Nice work Ty! Here's a video clip from the event of the MC giving Tyler and the production team props.

Dave and his friends went out afterwards to celebrate as well. Dave and Tyler were very grateful to Jason and Rachel for being willing to haul so much of Tyler's equipment up to Denver for him. That saved them money and the hassle of hauling a trailer. Dave is very lucky to have a friend like Jason.
On another note....while Tyler was working, Dave and his friends did get away to watch a Rockies game (maybe even two games?) on a beautiful summer night. They had some great seats!

Thanks to Jason and Rachel for their help, and for keeping Dave company in Denver.

No Denver for the girls

Well, Dave and Tyler made it safely to Denver, but it's not going to happen for me and Ava. We had flights this morning at 5 am to fly to Denver until Sunday, but the universe had other plans for us. While we were on the way to the airport at about 3:30 am, I got a text from Frontier that our flight had been cancelled. After turning around an going home, I looked into why our flight was cancelled and it was because of a worldwide Microsoft outage, which grounded flights everywhere. I looked into getting us on another flight, but there were no options that made any sense. We wouldn't have been able to get there until late on Saturday, and we were planning to fly back early on Sunday. Instead, we got a refund and found other things to do this weekend. It included some shopping and a dinner date in downtown Chandler. I'm bummed not to be able to see Tyler's hard work in action, but I'm ok with a relaxing weekend with my girl.

The end of Ava's adventure

For the last few days of Ava's east coast adventure, she got to go to Six Flags, Atlantic City, and NYC! Here are some of the awesome pictures that I was sent over the weekend.

In NYC, they visited Time Square, went to the top of the Empire State Building, and Central Park.

I'm so excited for Ava. She got to do so many fun things during the 3 weeks she spent with Lexi and her family. We were pretty worried about Ava having a boring summer since she was still dealing with her back injury, but it turned out to be one of her most exciting summers ever! Since she wasn't able to swim or do synchro, and she was 2 weeks too young to get a job as a lifeguard, we thought she'd be sitting around all summer. Instead, she went to camp, spent a week living lake life, and then visited some great spots on the east coast. I'm grateful to Lexi's family for including her. It's nice to know she was a welcome guest in their home, and that she was always up for an adventure! We're looking forward to having her home, and I'm sure part of her is ready to just relax a bit at home before she heads back to school in a couple weeks.

Getting ready for Denver

How much stuff do you think is needed to host an VR Esports event? The answer is this much, and way way more that is not pictured. You probably remember the amazing event that Tyler helped to organize in Denver last June, and it's time for VRML Con 2024! He and Dave are leaving this week, and Ava and I will head there for the weekend. Dave has a good friend, Jason, who said he and his wife would drive up for the weekend and help haul some of Tyler's gear in their truck. That was very generous of them, and saved Tyler from having to arrange getting a trailer. It is A LOT of gear, and so much organization is needed to make it all happen. Our living room looked like this for awhile as he was getting it all ready. Here is a video of the whole room. Stay tuned for more about the weekend in Denver!

Flying with friends at Pali

I stuck around for the last weekend in Pali because I had friends coming to visit and fly in the cool mountain air for a couple days. Jan, George, and Kaylin drove over from AZ, and Carol and her husband drove up from the LA area. A few camp friends flew with us too, as well as others who got to try catching for the first time. It was a really great last weekend!

Here we have most of the group that got to fly with us on Saturday. We were joined by Giraffe, Mojo, UV and Diver from camp today. It was a beautiful day to fly, and afterwards, we all went to Lake Arrowhead and had a great brunch. After that, a few of us wandered around the lake a bit and explored some shops and enjoyed the day together.

One last picture of some of our crew before we all hit the road to make the drive back to the blistering inferno that is Phoenix. Just the thought of that heat makes me want to stay in the mountains!
Until next year, Coconut is outta here!
