One Second Everyday-May

I saw someone post a video on Facebook about a month ago about an app they'd been using for an entire year called "One Second Everyday." I watched part of her video and realized right away that I wanted to start my own. I downloaded the app and got started recording one second every day. On the website for the app, there's a TED talk from a guy who came up with the idea. He makes so many great points in this video, and it makes me even happier that I started it. He talks about how it's so easy to forget all of the day to day things that happen in our life. Sure, we may remember them when prompted by a photograph or a spoken reminder, but it's so easy to forget. We have also become a culture of people who view an experience (like a concert, for example) through the screen of our phones. Why not take jus a one second video to remember that time, but then put away the phone and enjoy the moment? For me, just by watching this one month of one second videos, I'm able to remember what our month of May 2016 held--the little things, the typical activities, the memories made. The guy from the TED talk speaks about how his family went through a tough medical issue and he was able to record those moments too--life is not just full of happy times, and the rough times are important to remember too. I plan to keep it up as long as I can, and hope to have some great videos to share along the way. I encourage you to try it too! What would your one second every day look like? Here's mine for the month of May 2016.

Roller skating and Frost with Ava

I got back from my run today, and Ava wanted to go roller skating. She reminded me that I had a pair of roller blades in the garage, and asked if I'd skate to the park with her. Yes, I have roller blades somewhere, but I haven't used them in about 12 years....at least! I guess it's a little like riding a bike though--I did just fine. We were going to skate to the park, but since Ava is still a little wobbly on hers (especially going over the slanted driveways on the way to the park), so she had the good idea to walk to the park and put on our skates there. We cruised around the basketball court for awhile, and we had a lot of fun! Good idea, Ava! Thanks for getting me back out there on my wheels!

Later in the day, I had some errands to run and shopping to do, and Ava was happy to go with me. She's fun to take with on shopping trips. We decided to treat ourselves to some Frost gelato while we were out. It was a fun Mommy/Ava date!

First time return!

I FINALLY made it to the return bar on my half turn. I've had it out of lines for quite awhile, but have never gotten back to the bar. Thanks to finally getting the bar at the trapeze show at the show last week, I had a little more confidence going into this. It was super exciting for me!

Doggy Doom by Tyler

Tyler has gotten to be a very good writer. He really enjoys writing stories, and does a great job of writing in a descriptive way, with interesting dialogue between characters. One of his assignments for the end of the year was to write a story that he would be able to have bound into a hard copy book. He worked on his story "Doggy Doom" for quite awhile, and did a fantastic job.

He drew this cover art while he was sitting at swim team practice with me one day. If you're familiar with our mountains here in the Valley, you'll probably recognize the Superstition Mountains, which are the view we have from the Skyline Pool. The dogs are some of the characters in his story.
He did have some other artwork within the book, but they aren't in this version of it. The photo below is the back cover of his book, an excerpt from the story and a couple pictures of the dogs. Great job Tyler! You are such an amazing writer, and we know this is just the beginning of your writing career. We look forward to many more great stories!

11:14 pm, June 17, 2019
I entered the large dog pound, I had been creating a list with every dog breed and their picture. The specific breeds I was looking for was a siberian husky, a great dane, and a bull mastiff. At the cashier desk there was a fat man smoking an electronic cigaret.
“Yo, Kid!” The man said, taking the cigaret out of his mouth and puffing vapor.
“Hello, I’m Tyler” I answered.
“What do ya want… Tyler!” He yelled
“I’m just looking to see if you have a great dane, siberian husky, or a bull mastiff.”
“I’ve got a great dane. He’s a skinny guy” Said the man.
“Can you take me to him,” I was excited, “please.” We went into the back of the building. And sure enough, there was a great dane in the bottom left cage. The fat man unlocked the cage.
“What’s up with you?” He said. The great dane’s eyes were closed “Wake up dumb dog” he snapped his fingers in front of  it’s face. I jumped when the dog clamped his jaws on the man's hand. “Waaaaaaaaaaa! Owwwwww!” He screamed. I frantically jumped over them and ran out the glass door.

12:34 pm, June 17, 2019
My cousin Matt and I went to our friend Chris’s house. When we got inside Chris told us to try to stay away from his dogs.
“Why” I asked, getting nervous. I hoped they weren't attacking like the great dane did.
“They seem to have the flu” Chris told us. I breathed a sigh of relief. We sat on the couch In the living room. I told them about the great dane.
“Let’s not think about that” Matt said, turning on the T.V. The news was on.
“Wait! Don’t change the channel!” I told Matt.
On the T.V. was a man called Dr. Hobbs. He was a vet. “Hi, I’m Dr. Hobbs” he said. “We are in grave danger! For unknown reasons, dogs across the United States are attacking people… Actualy, Not just people! Everything, except dogs! Our Scientists are still trying to figure out why. This is very hard to do because we don’t have a sample of any evil dogs. Anyone who sees one gets killed by it.” Dr. Hobbs was scared. “Okay! I call cut. Cut!.. No I suggest you get rid of any dogs you own.” It changed to the weather report.
“There’s no way I’m getting rid of brownie!” Chris said. Brownie was his small chewawa/ terrier mix. He also had a white and black, rat terrier named Mini.
“I can’t get rid of Luigi” said Matt. Luigi was a Golden retriever. That day was the first day I was ever glad that I didn’t have a dog.
9: 48 am, June 18, 2019
I was sitting on the couch, holding my rabbit, Leo, and watching T.V. My mom walked into the living room and sat down with me. I told her about the dog situation.
“Ooh, scary” She said “Glad we don’t have a dog. Hey” she changed the subject. “Chris invited you and Matt a sleepover at his house tomorrow night”
“Cool” I laid back and stroked Leo’s fuzzy head.
5:06 pm, June 19, 2019
I waved to my dad who was driving away in the white minivan. I rang the doorbell to Chris’s one story house. Matt answered the door. He was holding Chris’s ipod that was  opened up to an app called “LEGO movie maker.” Behind Matt, Chris was moving LEGO jedi and LEGO stormtroopers a tiny bit, to make stop motion animation.
“Tyler,”  Chris called , “Come see Brownie and Mini” We went into the kitchen. Brownie and Mini were in their dog beds, twitching and squirming. Then suddenly, Brownie stopped.
“Brownie? Are you Okay, Boy?” Chris said. Brownie growled and opened his eyes. “Oh, Good. you’re alright.” Brownie growled louder. Then He barked and jumped onto Chris’s chest. “OW!” Chris yelled. He grabbed brownie and threw him through a closed window that was three feet away from them. The glass shattered and Brownie hit the wall outside. Mini stopped too. Matt thought fast. He picked up Mini and set her outside the back door. She barked and started softly hitting the door with her head.
“What just happened” I said, staring at Brownie who had hit his head on the wall and was now unconscious.
10:46 am, June 19, 2019
We burst in the door at the vet, Brownie was cradled  unconscious in Chris’s arms. When we were at our appointment, the vet took a scan of brownie. “There is a virus,” The vet said. He typed something on his computer. “I can’t find a match. Wait… I found one. It hasn’t been seen since the 14th century.” Said the vet.
      “Wow” Matt said in awe.
      “What is it?” I asked
“It was named Canismyocardial disease. It means Dog Attack disease”
      “Canusmoda… what?” Chris asked
“Canismyocardial disease” said the vet. “I’m sorry kid, but he has to die.”
“NO!” Chris yelled, “There has to be another way!”
“Well, there is one,”  he said, “But there is a great price. You have to keep him away from all dogs and people. Encluding you.” Chris sighed and we walked out of the vet.

12:09 p.m, June 20, 2019
We walked down the sidewalk to lunch. We were going to eat at Smashburger. I smelled something like rotten eggs and moldy steak.
“Ew gross! What is that smell?” I asked.
“Ew yuck” Chris held his nose. The stink got worse. We rounded a corner when it was really bad. It was a dead end, but there was a big blue dumpster in front of the wall. The smell was coming from the dumpster. We looked in. There were bones. Bones that were covered in red meat.
“Oh, jeez” Matt said, plugging his nose. Then I saw it. There was a human skull with bits of hair poking out of it.
      “Oh, God” Chris backed away.
12:21 pm, June 20, 2019
After that experience, None of us had much of an apatite. My cousin, Aiden and my other friend, Timothy, Were supposed to meet us at smashburger. When they got there, Matt told them about the dog issue and Canismyocardial disease.
“We heard” Aiden said. “Well, not about that… canus… motor car thingy.”
“Just call it Canine motor car disease” Matt said, proud of his name.
“Yeah, sure” Timoty said, taking a bite of his burger.
12:57 pm, June 20, 2019
“Oh, guys” I said. We were on our way home “My birthday is in nine days. Do you want to sleep over at my house?” everyone was saying “yeah,” “sure,” or “yes.” Suddenly we heard a low moan.
       “What was that?” Timothy asked.
“It came from the dumpster area” Matt pointed to the alley.
Maybe it's a cow I thought. When we heard it, it sounded like a cow. We rounded the corner of the alley. I saw it was not a cow. It was an old woman. She was covered in cuts and scrapes.
      “What happened?”Aiden asked.
“Da… Da-da…” she pointed to us. Us? I thought We didn’t do this to you. “Da… do… dog” Then she laid her head down and closed her eyes. I thought she was pointing at us, But she was actually pointing to a large, brown pitbull that was behind us. The pit bull leaped with a growl onto timothy’s back, it’s claws tearing through his shirt. Timothy screamed. I had to help my friend, so I Jumped with my hands extended at the pitbull. My hands made contact with the side of it’s torso. It toppled off of timothy and onto the cobblestone floor. I grabbed Timothy’s hand and pulled him up. We started to run away from the ferocious dog. I was glad to have beaten the dog, until Timothy screamed: “Tyler!” I turned around. The dog had clamped his jaws over timothy’s hand. Timothy was so scared he jerked his hand out of the dog's mouth. Timothy screamed and clutched his hand. I noticed the dog was chewing something. Then I saw that timothy had chunks of flesh missing from his hand. I was looking to see if everyone was alright.
Matt I thought He’s fine. Chris, He’s Okay. Aiden… Aiden? Aiden was gone. I looked back at the dog. He was creeping toward us, forcing us into the corner. It was about to pounce but out of the sky fell a trashcan. It landed square on the dog's head, spilling cinder blocks across the floor. We all looked up to see where it came from Chris, matt, and I laughed when we saw where it came from. Aiden was leaning over the top of the building next to us.
1:10 pm, June 20, 2019
We were waiting for Timothy, in the lobby of urgent care. Finally, the door opened and Timothy walked out with a doctor. He had a bandage cast on his hand.
“Timothy, are you okay” Aiden asked.
“Thanks to you,” Timothy said, “I’m fine.”
Aiden was confused. “Why thanks to me?”
“You dropped that cinder block trashcan on the dog.”
“Oh, I did do that.” Aiden was proud with himself.
“If you didn’t, We would all be dead”
11:18 am, June 22, 2019
We had gone two days without a dog attack. There had only been seven evil dog sightings in the state. I felt like inviting my friends over to celebrate. So, I invited them.
      “Tyler, Ava” My mom called.
      “Yeah?” I answered
“Can you pick one bag of each fruit?” she instructed. I had four citrus trees in my backyard. I had a tangerine tree, an orange tree, a lemon tree, and a grapefruit tree. After I picked grapefruit and lemons, and Ava picked oranges and tangerines, We set the bags by the door.
1:32 pm, June 22, 2019
Everyone was at my house, except Aiden. We were playing with my lego dinosaurs when the doorbell rang.
“I’ll get it” Timothy said. When he was on his way to the door it rang four more times. Timothy opened the door.
It was Aiden. “RUN!” He screamed, bursting through the door. We saw why we should run. A red eyed husky was running at us.
“Oh Carp” Matt said.  He threw the door shut but it was too late. The dog was already in the doorway. So we ran. We ran out the back door. Matt closed it in front of the dog, But that didn’t stop it. It ran through the glass.  We turned left. We turned left again. We got to the gate. Then I remembered. My dad had put a lock on the gate that can only be opened with a key. We were cornered. The dog slid to a stop on the loose rocks. It started creeping toward us. It was then I saw the overturned wheelbarrow with a board on top of it.
“Up here!” I yelled. We got on the board. The dog stared up at us and growled. Suddenly I got an Idea. I jumped off the wheelbarrow and onto the dog. “C’mon!” I said. Everyone else hopped off the wheel barrow. “Up the tree” We all climbed the grapefruit tree. Matt was the last up, but the dog grabbed his untied shoelace. It pulled him down onto the ground. The dog was about to bite him, but suddenly Chris jumped onto the dog's head. I followed him, landing on its back. Aiden landed in its rump. I helped matt up and we ran to the door. Suddenly the dog got right in our path.
“Throw the fruit!” Aiden yelled, grabbing the bags. We hurled three bags before the dog gave up and ran through the broken door and out the front door. We survived again.

2:26 pm, June 23 2019
We were playing on a wall covered in vines. I leaned against the wall and surprisingly, I fell through. When I stood up I was staring at a very old building. It was covered in vines and bushes. “C’mon in, guys” I said. They all walked through the vines.
“Wow” they all said. Then I saw a sign. It said                      Montessori Education center. That was my school. But my school was montessori education center north campus. Tith was just plane Montessori Education Center.
“That’s our school!” Timothy said. “This place is old”
“Let’s check it out!” Chris said, running up to the door. We all agreed and went with him. Matt tried to open the door. It wouldn't budge.
“All together” I said. “One… two… three!” We all pulled. Finally, something snapped and the door flew open. It was very foggy inside and it was dark. I looked on the wall for a light switch, but I couldn’t find one. Then I saw something hanging off the light bulbs. It was one of the old lights that I saw in movies. I pulled the string and a dim light flowed into the room. I pulled the string on another one. Nothing happened. Then the light flickered and lit up, but not as bright as the last one.
Matt walked to a small brown table with a bowl of moldy, brown apples and a jar of rotten peanut butter. Next to the apples was a knife and a cutting board.
“What did you find, Matt,” I asked, “Ew, gross.” Suddenly a loud howl broke out. Matt picked up the knife.
“Uh-oh,” Timothy said, “Let’s get out of here.”
“Which door do we go out” Aiden asked. That was a good question. There were two doors. I didn’t remember which door we came in.
“Uhhhhh, Left” I said, pointing at the left door. We threw open the left door. Instantly we knew it that door wasn’t the correct door. The room behind the left door was dark and foggy, like the first one. Then we heard a growl. It came from the room behind the door. Then a poodle walked out. Its hair was cut into little balls of curly, pink fluff. We ran as fast as we could to the other door, but our path was blocked by a golden shiba inu with red eyes and blood on its lips. We were cornered.
“OW!” Aiden yelled. The poodle had bitten his hand. The shiba inu ran past us, to Aiden and bit the back of his ankles. “Ow!” Aiden yelled turning around. When he was distracted, the poodle jumped up and bit the back of his neck, hard. “Owwwwwwwwww” Aiden’s voice trailed off as he toppled onto the floor, dead.
“NOOOOO!” we all yelled. We forgot about the shiba inu until it made a growling noise. By that time it was too late. It Jumped at Matt, But he was very lucky. Matt was holding the knife blade out. The shiba inu landed on the knife, impaling his chest. Matt shook the suffering dog off of the knife. We ran to the door, but again, our path was blocked. This time by the poodle.
“Run, RUN” I screamed. We turned around and charged in the other direction.
“In the bathroom!” Matt yelled. He was looking back at us.
“Matt, lookout!” Timothy yelled. It was too late. Matt slammed into the bathroom door and dropped his knife. I bent down to get it, but a pink paw stepped down on the handle. When I looked up, the poodles was bearing its bloody teeth at me. I jumped up and ran into the bathroom. Timothy closed the door on the poodles head. I walked around the bathroom in search of something useful. There was a spider web in the corner. On the web was a black spider with a red mark on it.
“Well, hello there” I said. There was a red plunger by the toilet. I picked up the plunger and forced the spider in it. I dumped the spider on the poodles nose.
“Good idea” Matt said, but the spider wasn’t biting.
“Here” Chris said, grabbing the plunger from me. He tapped the poodles nose around the spider, hoping to make it angry. It worked. The spider chomped down on the poodle. It let out a whine and pulled its head out of the door. When the door closed it was very dark in the room. When my eyes adjusted I saw the light. I pulled the string. The light only made a small spark, But it was enough to search the cupboards.
“Look!” Chris yelled. He was holding a pack of glow sticks. There were five packages of twenty glowsticks. We cracked and shook a whole package and threw them around the bathroom.
Matt and I started playing sticks. Aiden and timothy started playing sticks.
3:48 pm, June 23, 2019
We waited in the bathroom for what felt like hours. By that time we were doing a three way lightsaber duel with the glow sticks. Chris was sleeping.
“I think it’s gone,” I said, “don’t smell any more perfume” I kneeled down by the door, ready to snatch the knife. “One… two… three.” Timothy flung open the door. I grabbed the knife, the poodle was gone. “It’s gone” I said.
“Okay boys,” Matt said, “let’s go home”
                  End

The dogs were gone. The dog attacks had stopped. No one knew what happened. The dogs Just disappeared. It’s like disease Just killed them. I didn’t care what happened to them. I was happy… Until October 22, 2019. I was at recess when I heard a howl. There was a coyote running at the fence. It jumped over and landed on a child. I ran into the classroom and told the teachers. Now wild dogs were attacking

Last week of school

It's been another great school year at Montessori Education Centre! The kids both did so well, and they had a fun year. It was good to have Ava in the same class that Tyler was in for 3 years, and her teachers really enjoyed having her in class. She did so well in first grade, which is no surprise! Tyler was in a new classroom this year too, but he was able to adjust to the changes of new teachers, kids, and expectations with no trouble at all. He was lucky to be in a class with his cousins Matt and Aiden again, but this was the last year that he'll have cousins in his class. It's hard to believe those kids will all be in junior high next year! Tyler did very well this year, scoring high marks on his AZ standardized tests (for whatever that's worth), and improved in all areas. His writing skills really seemed to advance this year, and we're always very proud to read his work.

The last week of school was a fun one in both of their classrooms. Unfortunately, I wasn't around for any of it! It was the week of my annual LeaderShape retreat, and for the first time since 2006, I stayed on site all week. It was a week of sleeping the dorms and eating in the ASU cafeteria, which I didn't really enjoy, but I love this program and always enjoy being part of it. Since I was gone, Dave was in charge of helping the kids get their costumes and outfits ready for the various themed days. He and Tina sent me pictures every day of the fun.

Monday was mismatch day in Ava's class, and nerd day for Tyler. Nailed it! Isn't it funny that he used to wear these glasses because he liked them and thought they looked good--now he's wearing them as his "nerd" glasses! You gotta love the pens in his shirt pocket and the pants pulled up high too.
Day two in Tyler's class was movie character day, so Dave helped him make a Jedi costume. Ava's class wore their shirts that they all got for being in the play. They say the name of the play on the front, and the cast list of names and the characters they played on the back.
I love this picture so much. Day 3 in Ava's class was costume day, and since we've been watching the Harry Potter movies, Ava wanted to be Hermione. Tina gave her a wizard robe, and Dave helped her find a gray sweater and MADE a yellow and red striped tie (he couldn't find one on such short notice). In case you're not sure who she's supposed to be, click this link for a picture of Hermione. I think we know what Ava will be for Halloween this year--we'll see! At least we have time to find a real tie for her.
The last day of school was pajama and crazy hair day for Ava. She did her own hair--one pony in the back, and two in the front. Tyler's class was done with the themed days. I guess the the for him was "last day of 4th grade cool."
Good job in school this year, kids! We're so proud of all you accomplished and the great work you did. You are a joy to have in class, according to your teachers, and you love learning--which is so important! This is going to be a fun summer, and then off to second and fifth grades! How did that happen? Quit growing up so fast!

Tyler's spring baseball

Tyler just finished his spring baseball season, and like I said when I wrote about the winter season, these boys have really come a long way! They had a great season with some really good fielding and hitting. You probably didn't see the post about winter ball because I just posted it (and back dated it so it what in the right place chronologically). Click this link to go back and see pictures from winter season.

Spring baseball can be a little tough out here in the desert, because it's starting to heat up. Those 10 am games were pretty warm some days! I don't know how kids play baseball through the summer. I'm glad the coach was taking summer season off, and that Dave wanted to as well. It was tough to sit in the shade and watch. I can't imagine how hot the boys are standing out there in the sun! They're troopers though, no complaining!

Shawna took pictures again, and I know the parents are very grateful for that. Here are some of the photos from this season, and you can click here to see the rest of them.

I know Dave really enjoys coaching these kids. They were a fun group of kids, and they were all hard workers. This was a tough season for Tyler at the beginning because he was involved in two accidents where his teammates got hurt. He hit a pop up during one of the first practices that hit a kid in the mouth and knocked out Wyatt's two front teeth (kid on the bottom row, second from the left). Luckily, the dentist was able to stick his teeth back in and there was no permanent damage, but it was still pretty scary! Poor kid! Within the next practice or two, Tyler was swinging the bat near the fence and another kid, John (back row, second from the left) had his fingers in the fence and fractured a couple fingers! Both kids were able to come back and play at some point during the season (Wyatt sooner than John), but it was an unfortunate way to start the season. They were both accidents, but Tyler still felt bad. Other than that stuff, it was a great season! Good job boys!
Ava gets an award for being a trooper through all of her brother's baseball practices and games. She's had to sit through quite a few practices since they were always on my trapeze nights. Here we are sweating through the last game of the season today.
Tyler, we're very proud of your hard work during your baseball seasons. You are a great team mate, you listen to your coaches and you always try your best. You are such an amazing kid, and any team and coach would be lucky to have you join them. Baseball may not be your passion, but it's so good that you get out there and do it. It's something you and your dad (and cousins and Grandpa Ed) can do together, and you are going to just keep getting better if you keep it up. Or, try something new....like swimming, I know you'd be good at that too! Ha! Love you buddy. Good job!

Our trapeze show

Terri & George's neighbor asked them if they'd be interested in putting on a trapeze show for them and a group of their co-workers (about 30 people). They agreed, and we all thought it sounded like fun! Now that the crazy neighbor is gone, they can do things like that without worrying about her freaking out. It's fun for us to get a chance to perform, even if it's just a casual thing for friends. We know we'll never be famous circus artists, and as Terri said before the show, "there are no circus scouts in the audience," but it's fun to share our hobby and our skills with others. To an untrained eye, we're damn good at what we do!

Rod was our catcher, and Terri, George, Nadia, Ashley, DJ, Quinn, Jen and I all threw him a couple tricks. There's just something about having an audience that really makes you try a little harder. We all called it "show magic" and we definitely had some magic that night! Everyone did really, really well and we all had so much fun doing it. Rod's dad is a photographer, so he took some photos for us and they turned out great. I threw a half turn and a split, which were both good (although my bar came back crazy on my half turn and I couldn't try for a return). The show magic helped me to get my first round trip since the end of January! It was so exciting! DJ caught a trick he's never caught with Rod, and Ashley caught her double (again, first catch with Rod). Great night all around!

Here's a video of my half turn....that picture above is a screen shot of my bounce from the net after my trick.

And here is my split catch, round trip!

I love this picture of all of us. There is just pure happiness on all of our faces! It was Rod's wife (George's sister), Linna's birthday, so she jumped in the picture with us. We put on a great show for her birthday! I love my trapeze family so much!
