During sick day #3, we were sitting outside on the patio when the kids disappeared into the house for awhile. When they came out, Ava was dressed in the full astronaut costume--boots, gloves, and helmet. They started their pretending by just tipping the chairs over and laying on them like they were in a rocket.
Then, Tyler remembered he still had his homemade space shuttle lying around. I say
still because we've been wanting to get rid of it for awhile now. He originally started building this thing back in July. He used his birthday money to buy 3 large cardboard tubes for making concrete pillars He painted them, put on stripes, cones for the top and made them in to the tank and rocket boosters. He used large cardboard boxes to make the shuttle. This shuttle project lasted for months. First it was at Claire's house for long time, and then it lived in Tina's dining room for about 2 months. The boys worked on it on and off for awhile, but she was finally ready for it to blast off out of there. Tyler had grand plans to set up some sort of mock lift off of this shuttle. But, like many of his projects, he moved on to something else and forgot about this one. It was still sitting in various areas around our house though, so the kids pulled it out today and finally had their lift off.

Astronaut Ava didn't feel it was necessary to wear her space suit when she took her space walk outside of her shuttle. She decided she'd be more comfortable in a short summer dress and bare feet. Does this make you jealous up there, ND friends? It's supposed to be 80 degrees here tomorrow....
It's taken 6 months, but they finally played with this space shuttle that Tyler spent so many hours (and so much of his own money) to make. I'm glad we at least got some pictures of it before it finds its way to our recycling bin. Sometimes, the fun is in making the project...this was one of those times.
